Let's be honest, building a successful career is a lot of work and building a crave-worthy creative career is really tough. Sometimes you get overwhelmed or feel downright uninspired. But don't be discouraged! I've composed a list of twenty-five tips you can use to get your creativity flowing and keep you on the crave-worthy career path. Go ahead, soak 'em up and share them with your fellow creatives!
- Get clarity on your career goals. Write a mission statement that excites you.
- Stick a post-it with your artistic and career goals on your mirror or computer. Glance at it daily.
- Keep your enthusiasm for your work by reminding yourself each day why you love what you do.
- Be accountable. Find a buddy and meet weekly via phone, Skype or in person.
- Expand your network. Success is not created in a vacuum.
- Strengthen your network. Stay in touch and share resources/news with new contacts. Don’t just collect business cards.
- Give yourself credit. Pursuing your dreams is amazing!
- Take a look at your daily activities. Are they helping or hindering you?
- Avoid autopilot. Be aware of each decision you make and why.
- Success comes in many forms. Decide what success means for you and avoid comparing yourself to others.
- Use the barter system but make sure the trade is equitable.
- Find a mentor.
- Mentor someone. You could surprise yourself with how much you’ve already accomplished.
- Stay abreast of what’s happening in your industry. Know who recently booked shows at your favorite theater or gallery.
- Surround yourself with people who are striving to achieve similar goals.
- Take yourself on an artist’s date. See a band, a play or an exhibit. Experiencing the work of others is a great way to fuel your own creativity.
- Have a meeting or an audition? Do your research and know before you go. Know who the decision makers are and what they are known for.
- Ask for feedback and take it under advisement, good or bad.
- Celebrate your victories.
- Say yes often but know when to say no. Your life will be richer for it.
- Honor your time; it’s your most valuable resource.
- Say no to the good so you’ll have plenty of room for the great.
- Make a list of the artists you want to be more like. Can you model them?
- Saturate your market. Think of ways that you can leverage the work you’ve already done.
- Strive for excellence, not perfection.
